Contemporary Pianist & Composer, Shigeru Kawai Artist
David Hicken was born in England and began piano lessons with his mother when he was three. He studied clarinet, organ and music theory from a young age, performed in orchestras and choirs, and worked his way through examinations for the Royal Schools of Music. After presenting numerous organ recitals throughout England, including at the cathedrals of St. Paul and Westminster in London, he left to attend music school in the United States at the age of seventeen. Hicken began composing using synthesizers and signed his first record contract with President Records when he was just nineteen. While living in California, he performed as the soloist with several orchestras. He then moved to the island of O’ahu, Hawaii where he composed a trilogy of solo piano albums, ‘Goddess,’ ‘Angels’ and ‘Faeries.’ He also composed choral works, and ‘Adoramus te’ was later performed at the Vatican, Notre Dame Cathedral, Carnegie Hall and Canterbury Cathedral. People all over the world have been discovering Hicken’s music through his popular Youtube channel, which has over 13 million views. After being inundated with questions about piano and composition techniques, he wrote a series of five books, ‘Secrets to Better Piano Playing,’ ‘The Ultimate Piano Workout,’ ‘Music Theory for Pianists,’ ‘Secrets to Better Composing and Improvising’ and ‘How To Make a Living as a Pianist and Composer,’ all of which are available through his website. His main source of inspiration comes from his love of travel, and he can often be found in some of the most remote and beautiful places on the planet.
